Trek No. 8: LEH - LAMAYURU via LIKIR (6 days)

DAY 1

Leh - Likir

Drive to Likir village, visiting Spituk and Phyang monasteries. At Likir visit Likir monastery with its giant statue of Maitreya Buddha, then walk downhill to the camp. O/N in tent

DAY 2

Likir - Yangthang (3-4 hours)

Start the trek following the road, then take a shortcut and cross the river. On an arid trail gradually climb to a small pass called the Pobe-La (3'550m, 11'647ft), then walk to the village of Sumdo. Cross the river and towards the Charatse-La (3'650m, 11'975ft). From the pass, trek downhill to the village of Yangthang. O/N in tent.

DAY 3

Yangthang - Hemis Shukpachan (5-6 hours)

Trek downstream to reach Rizong monastery. After the visit to the monastery, climb the Sermanchan-La (3'750m, 12'303ft) and enjoy the beautiful view of the Hemis Shukpachan village. Visit the small temple and school. O/N in tent. 

DAY 4

Hemis Shukpachan - Tingmogang (3-4 hours)

Trek to Tingmogang village (3'200m, 10'498ft) after a short walk crossing the river and a steep descent to a dry valley. Continue across the mountain side and climb to the summit of Meptek-La (3'720m, 12'204ft). Easy half-hour descent to the village of Ang from where you trek to the prosperous village of Tingmogang or Timisgam. If time permits, visit the beautiful temple of Avalokitesvara and red chapel of huge Maitreya Buddha. O/N in tent.

DAY 5

Tingmogang - Khaltse (4 hours) - drive to Lamayuru

Walk through Tingmogang, cross fields and reach the river. Climb steeply to the Bongbong-La (3'630m, 11'909ft). Long and gradual downhill trek to the road where the Jeep waits to drive to Lamayuru (1 hour). Visit one of the oldest monasteries of Ladakh and enjoy the view of the fascinating moon-land scenery. O/N in Guest House

DAY 6

Lamayuru - Leh

Drive back to Leh, on the road visit Alchi Choskor famous for its frescoes, woodcarvings and stucco art. O/N hotel in Leh.
